PASDB's INTERVENTIONS FOR THE ACCESS TO DRINKABLE WATER FOR ALL
"WATER FOR LIFE" PROGRAM
The ‘Water for Life’ program is a natural continuation of the actions carried out those six past years in the framework of one of PASDB’s three fields of action, the access to drinking water for all.
Until now it dealt with the building of wells.
Mini treatment and purification plants for contaminated
water
The ‘Water for Life’ program consists mainly in financing and installing small factories of treatment/purification of contaminated waters, in areas (slums in and around Yangon) where sanitary conditions are awful due to the use of not drinking water. This water, drunk by the most fragile populations, is highly polluted by heavy metals, sundry chemical substances, bacteria and worms coming from animal and human faecal matter. This causes serious diseases, especially to children.
The installation of these mini insanitary water treatment plants is usually performed in monasteries, which are privileged places with high rain water storage capacity and where the equipment can be regularly maintained.
Thanks to the ‘Water for Life’ program, thousands of litres of not drinking water can be treated every day (1000 litres per hour) and each small factory benefits thousands of inhabitants, often refugees from armed conflicts.
The first small factory for the treatment/purification of water was created in January 2015, in the great monastery/orphanage/school of Aung Zayar Min, which has already been benefitting from PASDB’s help for 2 years (we buy them rice).
Three additional projects have been completed in and around Yangon during the year 2015.
Average cost for installing one such small factory: 3800 euros.
Of course, the construction of wells will continue according to need and possibilities.
